Group 4 Update

We have done the first two slides and the charts from the survey completed. Sarah has done all she has to do because she created survey and wrote proposal. We have broken down the PP into segments for each of us.

Introduction slides-Taylor Winkler (2-3)
Statistics and Facts-Kelley Malone/Raven Carr (3-4) good sources and cite them
Video Slides-Shelby Williams (2-3)
Survey Slides-Jamie Howard (3-4)

This is not final this just what Jamie and I have come up with so that we can get this done.

  1. SOOO glad y'all did that. It's much easier to think about all written out like that. You have access to the survey results, right?

  9. Gay and Lesbian Adoption Facts

    (lgbtfamilycircle.com)

    •1976 there were 300,000 – 500,000 gay/lesbian biological parents in US

•1990 an estimated 6-14 million children have gay/lesbian parents

•US Census 2000, National Survey of Family Growth 2002, and Foster Care Analysis 2004:
-2 million gay/lesbian people are interested in adopting
-65,500 adopted children living with a L/G parent
-16,000+ adopted children living with L?G parents
-G/L parents are raising 4% of adopted children in US
-Adopted children with same-sex are younger and more likely to be foreign born

•96% of all US counties have at least 1 gay couple with kids under 18 in the home (note: only 7 states and the District of Columbia have laws supportive of G/L couple adoption)

•There is no federal law that prohibits or allows gay or lesbian couples to adopt. It is solely decided by the state.

•Florida is the only state that bans all homosexuals from adopting.

•The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry 2006 – children of gay or lesbian parents are not more likely to become homosexual and also show no difference in their gender identity or behavior

•Top 5 states with gay and lesbian adoptions:
    1. California
    2. New York
    3. Massachusetts
    4. Texas
    5. Washington

•The Urban Institute found that a national ban on gay or lesbian adoption would result in 9,000-14,000 children never being adopted, it would cost states $100,000-$27 million, and the nation $87-$130 million

•Children who are never adopted are released from foster care at age 18 or 21 – The Donaldson Adoption Institute report that 25,000 children age out of foster care every year. These children are more likely to fall into poverty, be incarcerated or homeless, and have children at younger ages.
